Central Normal School is a vibrant learning environment where we encourage whanau to share all learning with their tamariki. There are regular events that enable students to demonstrate their increasing understanding across all curriculum areas.
At Central Normal School, we believe that the active and authentic involvement of students in their learning is crucial to engagement and achievement.
Students actively drive WISE within the school.
We believe that students are the heart of Central Normal School and actively seek student voice to make OUR school a great learning environment.
We offer quality teaching and learning by providing diversity and variety throughout our teaching teams. Each team provides stimulating and exciting learning opportunities for students making use of modern learning environments and ICT.
At Central Normal School classrooms are colourful, organised and reflect children’s learning.

We are Catherine Pallesen, Mark Riley and Rachel Mason – 3 out of 6 of the teachers in Whārite Team. After a successful year of collaborative teaching and learning last year, we are at it again for 2018 which means we will be teaching together in the i-Zones with new entrant to Year 1 children. We are very excited to continue on this learning journey!
We each have our strengths, specialties and interests: Miss Pallesen loves anything to do with art and creativity. Mr Riley is a technology whiz and a digital expert, and Miss Mason enjoys diving into reading, with music and movement thrown in the mix. What an adventure this year will be!
We are looking forward to meeting our bright and bubbly students along with their families and whānau, so come on in and say hello!
Please feel free to contact us by email too.

Kia ora koutou! My name is Mrs Lesley Blackmore and in 2018 I am teaching a class of energetic, bright and happy Year 2 students. Room 4 will be our home room, but we will also participate in exciting activities across the Wharite Team. Your children will contribute to a learning environment where they can develop and share their kind, caring and helpful attributes as good friends and class colleagues. I am looking forward to another successful year where your children will experience, experiment and grow their confidence while taking control of their own learning.
A few of my personal interests involve horses and riding, fruit and vegetable gardening, art and music, but most of all I enjoy working alongside my husband on our small farm, and spending time with our growing family.

Kia Ora and welcome to the 2018 School year. I am looking forward to teaching your child and sharing their learning journey and successes with you. I teach the year 1 and 2 students in Room 3 and I will enjoy your support with reading at home for enjoyment and mileage, and with number activities and games. We will also be working collaboratively with Mrs Blackmore and Miss Boyack.
I have taught at CNS for a number of years. I enjoy gardening, walking and cycling. I also enjoy live shows and musical concerts. I was delighted to continue to be recognised by the MOE as an Advanced Expert Classroom Teacher. I have two grown up daughters. Jemma is a designer in Palmerston North and Katie is the designer for MUSA (Massey University Student Association). Both girls attended Central Normal School. My husband, Nick, is the Head of Guidance and Counselling at Freyberg High School.

I am really excited to be joining Wharite team again. I have spent the past two years in Maharahara and look forward to sharing some of my experiences there with the junior school. I am even back in old classroom Room 2 where I have previously taught new entrants to year 2's! I'm the lead teacher in the Arts - with a particular passion for music. I enjoy singing and playing the guitar. I am also very passionate about keeping fit and being outdoors and so enjoyed making the most of the wonderful summer we have had! I can't wait to meet you all and share in your child's learning journey this year.

Kia ora koutou! My name is Mrs Gabrielle Barnett and I am very excited to join the Central Normal staff. I am co-teaching the New Entrants with Catherine Pallesen in the i-Zones, every day from 9.00 - 1.00pm. I look forward to getting to know the children and their whanau. I previously taught at St.James' and Rongotea schools, and have many years experience in Junior classes. I am passionate about literacy learning and guiding and supporting each child to achieve.
A few of my personal interests are: being with our family of 5 daughters and 7 grand-daughters (the first grandson is due soon!), going to the theatre, reading, and more recently travelling overseas.
