Tena Koutou katoa, Nau Mai Haere Mai. I am immensely proud to be the Principal/Tumuaki of Central Normal School/Te Kura Tuatahi o Papaioea, a unique and diverse school in the centre of Palmerston North.

Prior to Central, I have been the principal of two other schools, Koputaroa School and Fairfield School, both in Levin. Before my principalships in Levin, I was the Assistant Principal at Russell Street School in Palmerston North.

I have an absolute passion for learning and teaching and ensuring our children are engaged in a rich and authentic curriculum. I believe children should be at the centre of the learning process, where they have a voice alongside their teacher with designing the learning. I am also committed to ensuring our children have as many opportunities as possible, which allows them to engage with activities and experiences, which may relate to their passion or interest. I’m also very passionate about play based learning for our younger children, where children are able to ‘be children’, where they can learn a vast range of skills and social development through play.

I also have a great interest in educational leadership and developing the capacity and capability of our emerging leaders.

I have great pride in our school and welcome your visit to our kura.

Ngā Mihi

Kia ora, I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to be assistant principal. I have previously taught in Maharahara and Matanginui and have done intervention teaching across the school. I am passionate about teaching and learning and believe that every child has their own talents and strengths that are just waiting to be discovered! I love playing sport and you will often see me out in the playground playing games with students (some of you may even play against me at netball). Please feel free to come and say 'hi' or ask me a question! Ngā mihi.

Hi. I'm Karen Phillips. I am the chairperson of our wonderful PTA. During the year we raise funds to support teaching and learning across the school.
