News letter No 10    30th October 2008

Kia ora and warm greetings

Here we are near the end of week three, term four.  Can I say that the days are passing too quickly for me!  These are interesting but demanding times; for some, even difficult.  There are all the concerns around the NZ and World economies, elections in USA followed so soon after by our own. More significantly for most are the daily demands of living - work, family, the kids, the groceries, the weather, the garden, and ‘on it goes’.  I trust that for you and your family there will be some time to spend together, enjoy each other’s company, and that there are some words of kindness, support and encouragement said.

FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE, INFORMATION, AND SOME REMINDERS

Staffing and school numbers:

The Board of Trustees is currently working through the final stages of appointments for teaching staff 2009, and as well the principal’s position.  When these appointments are finalised you will be informed through a newsletter supplement.  Our numbers continue to grow!  The roll is currently 533, higher than at this time last year.  There is particular pressure on numbers in our junior school at the moment.  It seems as if we have had new children starting school almost daily since the term began!  If you know of children wishing to be at Central Normal in 2009 please call in for a chat.  We need to know as well, names of children turning 5 next year so that we can plan for their start at school, this is especially important for families wishing for their child to be part of Te Arawaru, our bi-lingual Maori team.  Vacancies are minimal!!

The Board of Trustees

The Board has a new chairperson in Mr Murray McDonald.  We are delighted that Murray was willing to take on this new responsibility in support of the school.

Trish Mullane resigned from the position as ‘Chair’ at the October meeting.  I wish to acknowledge the excellent work Trish has done in support of Central Normal School these past four years.  Trish was a great supporter of the PTA and  then was elected to the Board and appointed Chairperson at the beginning of 2007. She has been a great leader and strong advocate for the children and staff of the school.  Thank you Trish for all you have done, and will continue to do for the school.

Please see the letter from Trish included with this newsletter.

The Regent Concert is just one week away!

Thursday November 6th commencing at 7.00p.m. Approximate finish time 9.00p.m.  The children have been practising hard and I know that we will be in for a great evening.  Please do get to the Regent and book your seats.  It really is a shame if some families miss out.  Please note too, that we must know if your child is unable to attend.  Every child has a part to play in an item and as well need a seat to sit on!  Please contact your child’s teacher with a note if he/she will not be attending.  (Children attending the concert may have a sleep in on the morning of Friday 7th if that is feasible for the family.  School can start for them at 10.50 a.m. – after morning play.)

On the day (Thursday 6th November) children will travel by bus both to and from the Regent for a rehearsal.

NOTE: No bought lunches that day!

  • Children may bring only water to drink
  • All children need to be at school on time at 8.55 a.m. (Don’t be late you will miss the bus) .

Brand new 19 inch Flat Screen LCD TV. -  Raffle.

Tickets only $2 and available from the school office.  They will as well be on sale at the Regent next Thursday evening.  It  will be drawn before the end of the school year.  Profits will go towards the installation of an astroturf  cricket wicket on the school playing field.

Swimming Pool

The pool has had an upgrade, re paint and changing rooms and toilets have as well been painted.  Thank you to Russell Wallace, Murray McDonald and Andrew Mitchell for the work put in on Labour Day.  Extra mile stuff and much appreciated.

What do you have hiding in your bedroom?

Library books, school readers, sports equipment, sports uniforms.  If any of the aforementioned are at your house, please return them to school in a named plastic bag.  There is a lucky draw of a Manawatu netball and Manawatu rugby ball for two children who find things at home to return!

Gala / Food and Fun Fair     November 30th

Thank you to the parents who have already contributed much in preparation.  We are though going to need a lot of support.  A small committee from the PTA is working hard and they would love to have more names of parents or friends willing to assist in some particular way.  If you are able to be involved, please leave your name at the school office.

There has been a good supply of items coming in for the King Size ‘white elephant’ sale.  How about having a sort out and then bring items in to school for sale on the day.  (larger items will be picked up from your home!)

Trampathon Years 4,5,6  A major fund raiser that subsidises outdoor education for all year 5-6 children who go on the annual school camps.  The trampathon is on November 12th . Information home tomorrow.

PTA venture - Calendars 2009 (great gifts for grandparents / aunts uncles etc.)  Information about the calendars home tomorrow.

Class Photos

Tomorrow is the last day for orders – late orders will need to go direct to Colour Photique at a cost of $18

Scholastic Book Club

All orders need to be at the office on Monday 3rd November.

Children’s Health

There are numbers of upset tummies at the moment – PLEASE do not send your child back to school until they have had 24 hours without any symptoms.  This helps to stop the spread of this bug.

Head Lice – it should be noted that children left untreated can end up with scalp infections from scratching. This is serious as the child would then need to be hospitalised for treatment.  PLEASE be vigilant, and keep a check on your children daily!

Yummy Sticker Success

Congratulations to everyone on a fine effort.  All the yummy stickers collected during the year resulted in $691 for Central Normal to spend on sports equipment.

Keep collecting as the stickers are still on the apples at New World and Pak n Save also participating Four Square Stores.  You can pick up a sheet for your stickers from Mrs Cheer in Room 4.

Bible in Schools Donations

Have you returned your envelope with a donation to the Bible in Schools programme.  If not please can you send your donation in as soon as possible.

Sun Hats

All children will be expected to have a school sunhat to wear from next Monday 3rd  November.  A few 2nd hand hats are available from the office @ $2.00 new sun hats $12.00
