News letter No 6    26th June 2008

Kia ora and warm greetings.  Winter has arrived with vengeance but it is warm and busy at school.  Please do ensure that your children are at school, and on time! unless they are unwell.

The term is rapidly coming to a close.  This term is a week shorter than most but the vast majority of the children have made great progress and are doing really well with their learning.  There has been significant interest and inquiry around the ‘Keeping Safe’ work that has been done.  We hope that you have been  reinforcing this at home.

We have been pleased to welcome Erykah, Oliver, Shianne and Satua. We know that they will enjoy their learning and Central Normal.

FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE, INFORMATION AND SOME REMINDERS

Staffing:

We have been pleased to welcome whaea Tiya to our staff.  Tiya is teaching room 16 and I am sure that she will be a great asset to the children and the school over the coming months.  We were sad to receive a resignation from whaea Frances.  Frances will finish her work with us at the end of term to return to work in Marton.  We thank Frances for her contribution to the school this year and wish her well.   The Board is currently advertising to find a teacher for room 13 for the remainder of the year.

Cleaner - vacancy

One of our cleaners, Heike finishes her work in the school at the end of term.  We are looking for a cleaner 12 ½ hours per week to start term 3, July 21st (3.00 - 5.30p.m. per day) If you are interested please contact the school office as soon as possible so that this vacancy can be promptly filled.

Has your child paid the $3 for the Class Act Opera show? This is on Tuesday next week and will be a real treat, full of interest, music, costume and fun.  A reminder that for this show, only the children who have paid the $3 will attend.  (The total cost $5. The Board of trustees is subsidising the show at $2 per child.)

School sports teams:

Winter sports are well underway and our children are enjoying their games and many are having lots of success.  Again thank you to the parents who are coaching, managing and supporting.

Please ensure your child arrives at their sports venue with plenty of time to find their team and where they are playing.  All draws and ground information can be found on their respective web sites:

            Hockey: www.hockeymanawatu.org.nz

Xcountry 2008 Offical results

Wow, what a race!

On Tuesday June 10th, our cross country team, joined By Miss Mammone and Miss Ross, along with some of the parents travelled to Bainesse to compete in the 2008 Interschool Cross Country Competition.  It was a beautiful day and our runners were ready to tear up the trails. With team mates and parents cheering them on Central Normal’s Cross Country Team walked away with some impressive results!

Our year 5 girls stole the show with Jharna placing 2nd,  Hana placing 23rd, Diaz placing 84th, Ripeka placing 90th,  and Iyla placing 89th. Well done girls!

Our year 5 boys also left a lasting impression on the trails. Joe placed 41st followed by Ezra placing 42nd. Tiaki placed 68th and was chased by Te Ariki placing 69th, and Tamahae placing 70th.  Awesome effort boys!

Our year 6 girls ran their hearts out by placing 23rd  by Kristen followed by Janelle placing 28th, Janelle placed 41st and Hayley placed 76th and Chirvana placing an amazing 81st giving us our best highest division score.

Great stuff ladies! With our year 6 boys running last they had to tend with a lot of nerves. Our top runner was Kalyn placing 33rd, with Joseph placing 43rd and Arjuna placing 65th followed by Christian placing 71st and Matthew placing 81st. A great job guys!

A special mention to our very own Yr 4 Maia, who came 2nd in our yr 5 girl’s race at Coronation Park but could not compete because of her age. We will see you next year! Also a big thank you to Mr. McKenna and Mrs Loveridge for training this group on Monday and Wednesday mornings!  They all did well.  We will see if we can do even better next year.

Matanginui News:

The Senior classes will celebrate the success of our children's Inquiry Learning about being safe and healthy with an extended assembly on Friday 4th July, starting at 11.45.  Some children from each senior class will share their presentations that culminate their learning journey.

Young Leaders visit to Wellington

On 15th April 6 year 6 children went to Wellington for the Young Leaders day.  They listened to five speakers, Rob Harley, Judge Beacroft, Mark Inglis, Melissa Moon and Nathan Fa’avei

We learn’t lots of sayings but the one I liked best was “If you let your dreams be known the world will help you achieve”. Taylah

We travelled on the train to Wellington with parent supervisors Skye and Lisa.  Our hosts were Charlie Panapa and Danielle.

Its not the mountain we conquer it’s ourselves was my favourite part” Justice

Rob Harley Said “be determined and don’t give up” He is a successful journalist.  Josh

My favourite learning curve was from Mark Inglis saying - “It’s not the mountain we conquer it’s ourselves” Bailey

We had a wonderful time and I liked the quote from Rob Harley “You have to turn your scars into stars” by Palu

The focus of the conference was on owning our own world.  We had a great variety of speakers and were able to ask questions too.  We were all given a badge if we were microphone running – This was after each speaker you could give the microphone to someone else so they could ask a question.  By Christian

PTA  The parents and teachers association;

The PTA met this week and have decided to postpone the date of our Gala till November.  This is to avoid a clash with the St James school gala and as well have some warmer and more settled weather (we hope!)

The Virtues Project at our school:

Our current virtue is Service and it will be our focus for the next few weeks.  A key focus can as well be, to ‘serve’ at home, in the community and at school.

Signs of success:

Looking for ways to be helpful without waiting to be asked.

The safety of our children

Thank you to the parents who are parking legally, using the pedestrian crossings and setting good examples to their children regarding road safety.  We still have significant concerns regarding the safety of numbers of our children at times!

Passenger Safety messages

Ensure everyone makes their safety belt ‘click’ before you start the car on any trip – long or short.

Make sure all child restraints are standards-approved and fitted properly.

Make getting in and out of the car as safe as possible by:

-parking on the same side of road as the place you are going to.

- letting children in and our of the car on the footpath side only

Collecting the children and escorting them to the car.

Never calling a child across the road.

Get you child to sit in the back seat.

Lost Property

Remember we display the lost property outside the staffroom on Fridays providing the day is fine and dry.  Do come in and look for your child/rens belongings.  All property left at the end of term will be forwarded to a charity.

Head Lice

Please, please remember to keep checking your children daily for this problem.  Brushing hair thoroughly as soon as children come home from school each day does help to keep this continual problem to a minimum

Spare Clothing:

We would be most grateful for any donations of small track pants for children who get wet/dirty during the day.  Our supply is short.  If you are clearing out drawers and your children have grown out of clothing think of us please!

Room 14 Driving Safe Around New Zealand

Did you know??

  • That in the last five years 132 children were killed and 980 were injured?
  • In 2007 31 children were killed and 132 were injured!
  • Did you know that 6 children were killed while cycling?
  • Did you know that New Zealand is the 3rd worst country in the world for preventing child road related injuries or death!’

Personally I suggest that you don’t speed because of the consequences you will have to face after it.  It won’t be cool so what I say is “Please don’t Speed.”
