News letter No 7     31st July 2008

Kia ora and warm greetings once again.  The last newsletter stated that winter had arrived with vengeance.  This last week surely adds further weight to that statement.  We have lost some tree branches and had concerns about covered way roofing, we are though much more fortunate than some.   Again please do ensure that your children are safely at school, and on time, unless they are unwell, and please refrain from driving in the main school entrance.   It is not practical or safe to have the main entrance available for drop off or pick up, what ever the weather.

FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE, INFORMATION, AND SOME REMINDERS

Staffing:

We were pleased to welcome back to staff Mrs Jo Campbell.  Jo will be teaching room 18  (Te Arawaru year 1-2), and  Whaea Mihi Williams has moved to teach nga tamariki in room 13.  These changes are for the remainder of 2008.  We have also welcomed Whaea Ann Atkinson (part time)teacher and Mrs Kaye McDowall to the teacher aide team.

Congratulations to Mrs Sophie Baylis who has been appointed to the cleaning position advertised.

It was with sadness that we got word that Professor Tai Black, husband of teacher and Team Leader Whaea Shelley is far from well and in hospital in Cambridge, England.  Tai has had surgery and we are hoping that Tai and Shelley will be back in NZ before too long.  A big thank you to Whaea Jacqui-May Allison who is relieving in room 15 until Shelley’s return.

The current area of study

The focus of the current unit is Technology and the theme has the catchy title of ‘To Market to Market!’    The children are busy designing, making, planning  advertising  and preparing packaging for a range of items that will culminate in a market day here at school. (more about that later!) The Key Competency focus is Language, Symbols and Texts.

Maths

Find out about maths in the school curriculum and activities you can do at home to support your children. The first site explains the numeracy project.

School sports teams:

Well done to the boys and girls taking part in school sports teams.  The weather hasn’t been very kind to them of late, but we hear of developing skills and good competition.

Gymnastics Programme – Parent Help

Gymnastics will be taught in our Physical Education programme this term.  Children will need to wear suitable clothing – track pants/shorts/sweatshirt/t shirt.  No tights, skirts, or loose clothing. We would really appreciate your support for safety and to enable classes to be involved in more activities. If you are able to help could you please see your child’s teacher.  Thank you

The Virtues Project at our school:

Our current virtue is diligence.  It is about working hard and doing the best you possibly can.  It is about being industrious, giving all you have to give to what ever you do.

Signs of success:

Paying attention to what you are doing,  doing things carefully – step by step, practising to the point of excellence, giving your absolute best, not giving up.

Health and Wellbeing Survey

Your child will have brought home a survey which has been created to provide the school with a snapshot if the level of involvement the children of Central Normal School, have in Sport and other recreational activities.

Please take time to complete the survey and return it to the school office e before next Friday the 8th August.

Children’s Health

There are a lot of ‘bugs’ about at the moment.  Please do NOT  send your children to school if unwell.  They need to be tucked up at home to rest and recuperate!  Coming to school when unwell spreads the winter ills to other children and staff.

After school programmes

There will be no after school programmes this term.  There were insufficient options available for the children.   The school programme will continue to give all children a broad programme and it wont be too long before teams will be starting on preparation for the Regent Theatre Spectacular Concert which will be on 6th November.

Some Writing from the Classrooms

The Eleven Broken Windows by Nataleya  Room 19

Sometime in the weekend some vandals came and broke the school windows.  When Mrs Duncan saw it she was very angry and disappointed that some people don’t respect other people’s property.  When I saw it I was very angry and sad too.  It will cost the school a lot of money to fix the windows.

My new dog by Isobelle Room 19

I got a new dog from Wet Pets.  It is a Dalmation Hunter.  It is white with black spots.  It is five months old.  I named her Tinkerbell.  I stroke her and I feed her and I put water in her bowl.  She doesn’t always eat her dinner.  She doesn’t let me have my toys back because she doesn’t share my ball and my little ball.  She is a good runner, she runs very fast.  When she sees dogs she likes to make friends.
