Welcome to:  Liam, Brianna, Kobe, Matthew, Tuwhare and Taiko. We hope you really enjoy learning at Central Normal.

Staffing:

We say goodbye and a big thank you to Mrs Glenys Shore who leaves us, and in particular room 8 to be a full time Mum to her three children.  We have very much appreciated Glenys and her work in the school.  She has been hard working, developed very positive relationships with her class and provided a rich and interesting programme of learning for the children.

We welcome Mrs Tracey Katon as a permanent member of staff, to commence term 2.  Tracye is currently a senior staff member of Monrad Intermediate.  She is looking forward to teaching younger children, and I believe will be a great asset to Central Normal School in the coming years.

We welcome back Mrs Margaret Whyte to our junior team.  Margaret will initially be supporting programmes in rooms 3-4, and then commence a ‘new’ new entrant class in room 22.

Outdoor education, school camps:

It is good to have our camps completed for the year with staff, parents and children having a great time.  There were four trips to the Medical Centre in Hastings due to misadventures, but all children and staff came home tired but happy.

From the 1st to 11th April the year 5 and 6 children went to Camp David in the Hawkes Bay.  Two groups of children stayed for 3 nights each, with some children joining camp for day trips. The children went horse riding, abseiling, rock climbing, made rafts, used slug guns, tried archery, went across a flying fox and down a bush water slide and even cooked their own billy stew for lunch!  They had a fantastic time conquering challenges and facing their fears.  We are proud of the way they related to each other and managed themselves in this new, challenging and exciting environment.  We appreciate the extra miles that the senior team teachers have put in to make this a successful experience for everyone.

A huge thank you and well done to:

Teachers: Camp Leaders, Leone Cooper,  Robyn Tootill, plus  Lesley Blackmore, Frances Pere, Judi Driscole, Jo Scott, Maryanne Mammone, Ronald Nolan, Lyn Loveridge.  And parents;  Paul Feekes, Awa Melbourne, Deanna Selby, Bill Bailey, Aaron Fitchett, Linda Berg, Murray McDonald, Roseanne Henderson, Lynley Walker, Ricky Kingi, Rangitamoe Gardiner, Fiona Strang, Lyn Hoare, Cedric Bowen, Elizabeth Dalzell, Margot Mitchell, Tepa Baker, Molly Faifua, Cara Cummings, Jodi Heena and Mere Garton .  We trust you had a fun time, faced a few of your fears and conquered some challenges too!

Our deepest thoughts go out to the families and staff and students of Elim College in Auckland, following the recent disaster on the Mangatepopo river.  A most awful tragedy.

Children turning 5 in 2008:

If you have a child is turning 5, or know of children (in zone) turning 5, please see that the children are enrolled a soon as possible.  We have already a high number of children enrolled for 2008 and we need to be able to manage class spaces and numbers of children.  Please note that the roll for Te Arawaru (bilingual Maori) is closed for 2008.

Head Lice

We are very concerned by the numbers of children coming to school with infestations of headlice.  PLEASE check your child/ren daily and treat if necessary.  To avoid re-infestations brush the child’s head thoroughly every day as soon as they arrive home from school.

Public Health Nurse and Doctor Visit

Our school Doctor, Dr Shirene will be at school, with out Public Health Nurse, Margaret, on Thursday 15th May 9.30 to 11 a.m. If you have any health concerns about your child, please come to school at this time.

After School Programme 3.15 – 4.00 p.m. Monday – Friday will commence week three term 2 for 7 weeks.  We are looking for more tutors.  This is a paid job for the right people.  Have you skills in Drama, gymnastics, Badminton, volleyball, chess? Any topic that will interest and challenge our children! If so, call in to the school office and chat to Allister Smith.
