Staffing

Our warmest thoughts and love have been with Deputy Principal Catherine Cameron and her family.  Cath’s Mum and Dad both passed away in recent weeks.

Mrs Sharon Freebairn finishes a long period of commitment to the school at the end of this week.  Sharon has been a parent and sports coach, Board of Trustees member for six years, (three years as  Chairperson) and for 17 years has been a highly regarded member of the support staff. Thank you Sharon for all you have done for Central Normal.  We wish you the very best.

We have been pleased to welcome teacher, Mrs Tracye Katon and welcome back Mrs Margaret Whyte.  We as well have new to the support staff team, Mrs Jacquie Kelly. All are already contributing really well to the school programme.

The Parent Teacher Association

It would be great to see some more parents at our PTA meeting!  The notice for the current meeting is short!  It is on tonight – 7.00p.m. in the staff room.  You would be most welcome.  A huge thank you needs to be expressed to parent Paul Feekes, who with his daughter Georgia’s help has rebuilt the tyre climbing wall in the playground. A huge thank you Paul and Georgia from us all.

Safety for our children

Again it is necessary to remind parents about the need to always consider the safety of children at drop off and pick up time.  It is not safe or practicable to use the entrances to the school as drop off points! Please do not drive in, or pull up in driveways. (apart from parents of children with special needs or in an emergency)  Please park legally and if need be, walk your child to the school grounds.  There are unsafe practices out there and poor role modelling for our children.  Safety is a major focus of our current work and we plead for your support.

A message from the Board of Trustees

The last year has been one of great change in the school environment with the building of our fantastic new school hall.  The pupils are now reaping the benefits of being able to gather together as a whole school to celebrate and share our work, fun and song.  It is wonderful to see parents coming along to our assemblies again and would like to remind you that you are all welcome Tuesdays 9 – 9.30 a.m.

We are now about to enter another phase of change within our school environment.  The Board has regretfully accepted the resignation of our Principal Mr Allister Smith who will be leaving us at the end of this year.

Mr Smith has been a part of Central Normal School since 1953 firstly as a pupil, then as a Student Teacher in 1962 and principal since August 1988.

He has cultivated a place where staff and pupils are all respected and valued and whilst we will all miss him, past and present pupils and staff will always carry the lessons in life he has taught us.

It is the Board of Trustees’ responsibility to now go through the process of appointing a new Principal for the School, a task which we will treat with extreme care and consideration.

Trish Mullane

Chairperson.

Our current Virtue –        Assertiveness!

Is about being positive and confident.  Knowing that you are able to think for yourself and express your own ideas, opinions and talents appropriately.  It is our hope and expectation that the positive attributes of assertiveness will be further developed at school and at home.

Sports and the cross country running

Netball, Hockey and Basketball have all started with lots of positive results for Central Normal teams. Thanks to those parents who happily offer their time and knowledge to support our children. Without you our children would not be able to participate.

All draws and times are available on the following websites:

Netball: www.sportingpulse.com then search for netball Manawatu.

Basketball: www.pnba.co.nz

Hockey: www.hockeymanawatu.org

Please note there is NO Hockey or Netball this weekend (Queens Birthday)

School cross country: The Senior school will be holding their cross country at Coronation Park next Wednesday the 4th of June. We will require parent help to walk down to Coronation Park and back again. We also require parents for marshalling purposes. If you are available, please contact your child’s class teacher as soon as possible.

The middle and junior schools will also be running a cross country this year. More details to follow in the next few weeks.

Please remember to pay all sports fees as soon as possible to the office.

General

Healies - Please note:

These shoes are not suitable for school! They are particularly a danger during physical education and games, and as well if ‘wheeling’ on busy paths around the school.

If children need to wear the shoes to school, please take the wheels out, and use them just ‘at home’.

Lost Property

Already this term our box is full – we will display the clothing and shoes TOMORROW if it is fine and dry.  Please come in and collect your child’s belongings.

Head Lice

This is an ongoing problem in the school.  PLEASE keep checking your child/ren and treat as necessary.

Public Health Nurse and Doctor

Our school Doctor, Dr Shirene will be at school with the Public Health Nurse Margaret Jackson on Thursday 26th June at 10 a.m. If you have any health concerns about your child, please come into school at this time.  These visits are free.  If you wish to make an appointment please ring the school office.

Yummy Sticker Promotion

Remember to keep collecting the stickers and labels from 2kg bags of yummy apples for the school.  The more stickers we collect the more free sports gear we are able to earn.  Yummy apples are available from New World and Pak n Save Supermarkets.

A letter to Helen Clark from Madison Room 2 year 5

Dear Ms Clark,

I believe smoking cigarettes and tobacco should be illegal!

Smoking is a horrible habit that can cause a heart attack. The Government has tried to help people many times to stop this deadly habit using methods such as Quitline. It costs the Government millions of dollars each year for medical and hospital costs for people who have smoking related illnesses.

Smoking can make lungs unhealthy which can stop

breathing. If you have seen an ad on T.V seeing the difference between a bad lung and a good lung the bad lung has a heap of tar which is extremely dangerous to health and disgusting to look at.

Smoking around your children can give them cancer too. This is called second hand smoke. It can also cause adults and children to die at an early age. Buying a packet of cigarettes uses money that can be better used for buying food for families.

I am very worried about New Zealand’s health. I believe smoking should definitely be illegal, will you please do something about it.

Yours sincerely Madison

A Letter to Mr Smith by Janelle Room 2 Year 6

Dear Mr Smith,

I believe we should learn more songs for Singing in assemblies because people have not been singing.  The songs we have sung for each assembly so far this term have been around for a long time and have become a bit boring.

There is nothing wrong with ‘Turn on the Sun” but it has become rather tired as we have sung it each and every time.

If the children were to learn some new songs we will have more students involved with the singing.  They would also be less likely to talk in the middle of singing.

If you need some suggestions for new songs perhaps you could get the Student Council to do a survey on the types of songs the classrooms like to sing.

We enjoy hearing you sing because it motivates us to join in but we enjoy singing new songs with you too.

Thanks for your time.Janelle
