Dear Parents & Caregivers, T[n` koutou katoa

Welcome to another great week at Central Normal School.

Mrs Oliver’s Classes of the week

Congratulations to Rooms 19 and 10 for their great work and attitude – we are proud of you.

Central Normal School Council 2010  Last week the CNS School Council had its first meeting for the year.  Students from Years 1-6 have been chosen by their classmates to represent them on the School Council and will be working with Mrs Jan Thomas (DP).

Student Leadership development is the process of involving students in meaningful ways both in and beyond the classroom.  It is providing opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents, skills, and interests while continuing to develop new skills.

The school council provides an opportunity for students to bring new energy and ideas to the school.  It provides opportunities for students to get involved, deepen their commitment to their school community and to learn skills that can be transferred to the workplace or community.

The full school council will meet 1x per fortnight and on the alternate week, it will just be the Year 5/6 councillors, and they will be involved in work focussed on developing their leadership skills.

We look forward to an exciting year!

Jan Thomas DP.

Featherston Street Pedestrian Crossing:
We thought this information may be useful for you ………………

As you are all aware the Featherston Street Pedestrian crossing is extremely busy, with an extremely large volume of traffic passing it each day.

Up until 2008, this crossing was monitored with a school patrol made up of Senior students from Central Normal School, who used "STOP" signs to stop the traffic allowing the students to cross before and after school.

This patrol was the busiest in the city by far, and it was always extremely difficult for the students to find a gap in the traffic safe enough to put there signs out. In 2008 there were a couple of incidents where vehicles hit the signs of the patrols, and there were several near misses of the patrollers being hit.

Driver behaviour surrounding crossings can be interesting at times. At a normal pedestrian crossing without signs, if there is someone waiting to cross, the law states that vehicles must stop for that person. However if there are School Safety signs, vehicles only stop when the signs are out. Therefore often there can be up to 20 students waiting to cross the road, but more often than not, cars will not stop unless the signs are out., regardless of the driver seeing that the patrollers are having trouble putting out the signs because of the volume of traffic. I'm not saying that all drivers don't stop, as some are extremely courteous and see the Patrollers struggling and do stop, however I would be safe saying that 90% of drivers will not stop on there own volition, to allow patrollers to get there signs out.

Up until the start of 2009 this driver behaviour was a huge problem for the patrollers on Featherston Street. So due to this, and due to the fact that a number of students operating the patrol were nearly hit by motorists not being attentive while driving, it was agreed, with consultation between the school and Police that we would trial operating the crossing in the way that it is done now. It was just too dangerous for the students operating that crossing, and only a matter of time before one was hit, and either seriously hurt or killed.

Since that time, we have had no near misses of children, and the supervisors of the patrol have found that it runs a lot smoother and safer. It is operated now in a way, that when there are a group of children, the adult supervisor goes onto the crossing to stop the traffic on both sides and then two patrollers in high vis vests walk the children across.

If you have any queries regarding the operation of this crossing please do not hesitate to contact me directly on 351-3714.
