Dear Parents & Caregivers, T[n` koutou katoa
Welcome to another great week at
Mrs Oliver’s Classes
of the week
Congratulations to
Rooms 19 and 10 for their great work and attitude – we are proud of you.
Student
Leadership development is the process of involving students in meaningful ways
both in and beyond the classroom. It is
providing opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents, skills, and
interests while continuing to develop new skills.
The school
council provides an opportunity for students to bring new energy and ideas to
the school. It provides opportunities
for students to get involved, deepen their commitment to their school community
and to learn skills that can be transferred to the workplace or community.
The full
school council will meet 1x per fortnight and on the alternate week, it will
just be the Year 5/6 councillors, and they will be involved in work focussed on
developing their leadership skills.
We look
forward to an exciting year!
P.T.A. Easter Raffle We hope you
have received your book of tickets to sell within your family. If you do not wish to sell the tickets please
return them to the school office tomorrow.
A big thank you to the families who have already
returned the butts and money.

Please note this has now been postponed until next term. March
22nd will now be a normal school day.
Parent Conferences
We will be sending out Conference notices next Monday 15th March.
Please complete the forms and return to the office promptly. We will set up times for you to meet with
your child’s teacher. The afternoon
appointments will be on Tuesday 23rd March (We would like children to go home at 12.30 on that day). The evening conferences will be on Thursday
25th March beginning at 4.00 p.m. Note we have extended the evening times to accommodate as many families
as possible. Read the form, complete and
return it to school next Tuesday.
Hot Dog Lunches
We now have a parent helping organise this and will continue to have
hotdog lunches each Thursday – orders must be in to the office by Wednesday
each week. If you have a spare 40
minutes and are able to assist with the lunch treat we would love to hear from
you.
Children’s Health
Please be aware that a number of children are suffering with Inpetigo (School Sores) These may start from a cut or scratch
or insect bite infected by scratching.
If you suspect your child has these sores please take them to the
Doctor. The child will need antibiotics.
Public Health Nurse
and Doctor’s Free Visit
Dr Shireen and Nurse Jackson will be in the
school next Thursday 18th March.
If you would like to make an appointment for your
child to see the Dr and Nurse please contact the school office.
We thought this information may be useful for you ………………
As you are all aware the Featherston
Street Pedestrian crossing is extremely busy, with an extremely large volume of
traffic passing it each day.
Up until 2008, this crossing was monitored with a school patrol made up of Senior students from
This patrol was the busiest in the city by far, and it was always extremely
difficult for the students to find a gap in the traffic safe enough to put
there signs out. In 2008 there were a couple of incidents where vehicles hit
the signs of the patrols, and there were several near misses of the patrollers
being hit.
Driver behaviour surrounding crossings can be interesting at times. At a normal
pedestrian crossing without signs, if there is someone waiting to cross, the
law states that vehicles must stop for that person. However if there are School
Safety signs, vehicles only stop when the signs are out. Therefore often there
can be up to 20 students waiting to cross the road, but more often than not,
cars will not stop unless the signs are out.,
regardless of the driver seeing that the patrollers are having trouble putting
out the signs because of the volume of traffic. I'm not saying that all drivers
don't stop, as some are extremely courteous and see the Patrollers struggling
and do stop, however I would be safe saying that 90% of drivers will not stop
on there own volition, to allow patrollers to get there signs out.
Up until the start of 2009 this driver behaviour was a huge problem for the
patrollers on
Since that time, we have had no near misses of children, and the supervisors of
the patrol have found that it runs a lot smoother and safer. It is operated now
in a way, that when there are a group of children, the adult supervisor goes
onto the crossing to stop the traffic on both sides and then two patrollers in
high vis vests walk the
children across.
If you have any queries regarding the operation of this crossing please do not
hesitate to contact me directly on 351-3714.
