CENTRAL NORMAL SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER

10th June, 2010.

Kia ora koutou.  Nau mai haere mai

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This month we are spending time talking about Matariki. What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or the Seven Sisters.

When the stars of Matariki were clear and bright, it was thought the year ahead would be warm and the harvest plentiful.  It is a time to prepare, to learn, to share ideas and to celebrate the future.

Reminder: The ICAS exams are coming up in August.  This is an opportunity for children in Years 4-6 to take part in the ICAS English Mathematics exam here at Central Normal School.  This is a chance for your child to sit an exam along with children from around the world, including countries such as India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, USA and NZ and provides an opportunity to see how your child achieves in an international external examination.

Every student entering ICAS receives a certificate acknowledging participation and is also eligible for awards including High Distinction, Distinction and Credit Certificates, depending on their level of achievement.

The exams are marked by ICAS and each child will receive along with the appropriate certificate, an individual diagnostic report highlighting strengths and weaknesses.

In order for children to sit the exam/s, parents will need to pay $7.50 per exam.  This needs to be paid to the school office by Friday 25th June in order for us to send the applications away before the closing dates.

The exam dates are: English: August 3rd and Mathematics: August 17th.  Both exams will be sat here at school.

If you are interested in your child sitting both or either one of these exams, please let Mrs Jan Thomas (DP) know at: jthomas@centralnormal.school.nz or phone on 3593337, or simply send a note with your child to school.  Thank you to those people who have already contacted me.
