Dear Parents & Caregivers Ten` koutou katoa,

Welcome to week 2 Term 2 We have all enjoyed a very busy start to the term with lots of wonderful activities happening around the school.

We hope you like the murals on the cover – do come in and look at the work the children have recently completed.

The Sun Mural

The overall mural shows who and what is important to the students of Central Normal School.

The sun depicts happiness (Children being happy when they are at school.)

The sun’s rays are illustrated with things that are associated with our school: Manawatu River, learning, flowers, butterflies, trees, windmills, footprints, hills and the Marae.

The artist’s palette, the netball and rugby ball, the book and the guitar stand for things that are important to our school.

The large koru’s represent the staff at Central Normal, while the linked koru’s represent the students being linked together.

The smaller koru’s depict the children going home to their families - the other part of their life.

Included in the mural are images of the people who make up the school; staff, parents and students.

This mural was created by year 4-6 students: Marama (overall designer), MacDermott, Daisy Barbara, Nicholas, Fergus, Manesseh, Annie, Quaylah, Madisyn, Alice, Kaylee and Makeah.

The Rainbow Mural

The mural tells of how life is at CNS.

The sky represents the pathway of our school life.

The koru’s mean we are all linked together in our school life and show that we are all a family at CNS.

The sun represents brightness – the school is a happy place!

The hills mean life isn’t always easy - it can be hard, but we need to keep on trying so that we can achieve our goals.

The rainbow shows that there is a lot of colour in our lives - they are not just black and white but filled with lots of interesting things that add colour.

The maths symbols and books are to show that we like to learn at school.

The kiwis and the flax is show us as all being kiwis.

The hearts stand for love, both for our families and friends.

The houses represent the school, with the musical notes representing the sounds of children singing and the happy noise in the playground.

This mural was created by year 4-6 students: Psalm (overall designer), Stephanie, Ebeney, Sharn, Summer, Brook, Quincy, Natalie, Anna, Georgia, Caniece, Shontae, and Alyssa.

In week one of this term, Children With Special Abilities Art Group, designed and created a new school mural which is opposite the staffroom under the walkway.  Assisting them with this project was Rei, an ex Art Advisor for Massey. After the mural was completed she had the following to say:

Congratulations to Central Normal School for providing their gifted and talented students in art with an opportunity to extend their knowledge and understanding. I found almost without exception these students who had nominated themselves for this project displayed characteristics associated with artistic talent. They were able to work with greater persistence for a longer time with greater concentration. They found pleasure when encountering complex challenging problems and solved them themselves. They were confident to challenge myself when I suggested solutions that they did not agree with. At the conclusion of the project I encouraged the children to summarise their learning over the experience and was delighted with the maturity and accuracy of their student voice. I include several examples:

-       It was hard work, you have to think heaps

-       I found I had to be part of a group to share in the mural (I was impressed that this student started off sitting by himself and by the end had been accepted and now sat within the group)

-       I want to be an art teacher when I’m old and teach by letting the kids do it their way but helping them to know ways of doing stuff.

-       I’m glad my ideas took in all the things others said and could be the mural

Fire Alarm

Today we had an unexpected fire alarm about 9.30a.m.  There was no danger but we are very proud of our children and staff for evacuating the buildings very quickly and efficiently.  It really shows us that our procedures work very well if there is ever an emergency.

Children with Special Abilities Groups

At Central Normal School, we want to offer as many opportunities to extend our children's skills through extension programmes as we can, time and staff permitting.

So far this year, we have provided Maths (on-going throughout the year), Art (for 2 weeks), Sports (ongoing until the end of the year - this term starting with basketball and then soccer to follow) Student Council and Young Leaders (ongoing throughout the year)   Next week we will be beginning two dance groups. The dance groups are going to be taken by our very own Julia who is our Office Assistant.  She is giving up some of her very precious spare time to do this!!

We know that there are people out in our community with many talents and skills. Is there anyone in our community who would like to offer their special talents to assist us in providing programmes for our children with Special Abilities?

Things you could consider would be:

Types of programmes: There are many, many talented people in our community with skills we haven't even thought of.  Some ideas to help get you started may be:

If you have a spare hour each week and are able to help, we would love to hear from you.  Please contact Jan Thomas (Deputy Principal) at Central Normal School on jthomas@centralnormal.school.nz or phone 359337

NZEI Meeting 7th May

It would be most appreciated by our staff if children could be collected from school at 1p.m. on 7th May to enable staff to attend an important NZEI meeting.  We are aware that this is difficult for some families but would most appreciate your support. More information next week.

Scholastic Book Orders:

Please have your order into the school office by Monday 10th May, 2010. Remember if you wish to have an order ‘held’ at the office please put a note on the order form.

Head Lice

This reoccurring problem seems to be quite common at the moment.  PLEASE keep checking your child and treat as required.  It is very frustrating for parents who do the ‘right’ treatment only to have their child re-infected by an untreated child.  Remember we do have organic shampoo, gel and spray available at the school office at cost price! We also have nit combs for hire.

Lost Property

We will continue to display the lost property on Friday’s provided it is dry.  Please remember to come and look for your child’s clothing.  A reminder that if your child arrives home with property which does not belong to them PLEASE remember to return it to school the next day.  Children are reminded NOT to bring precious toys to school!

Telstra Clear Intelligent Rewards (Form enclosed)

This is a way for Telstra Clear customers to help the school and no cost to you!  The school will gain rewards which can be spent on school resources.  If you are a Telstra Clear customer we will most appreciate your support.

Remember Camp Meeting & P.T.A. Meeting tonight

The meeting for parents of children Year 5 & 6 going to camp is at 6.00p.m. TONIGHT.

We would love to have a great response to help this small but active and fun committee at 7.00 p.m. TONIGHT.

Board of Trustees Election

Voting papers have been mailed out.  Remember voting closes on Friday 7th May at 12 noon.  Thank you to the wonderful parents who have agreed to accept nomination for our Board.

Some Great Writing from Room 10 – This was shared at School Assembly

Takaro v Feilding by Jarrod

I smell the grass as my face falls into it.  That was unexpected.

I hear John calling for the ball as I run with it.  I couldn’t pass to him as there were too many people between us.

I see the devastation in the opposition’s faces and the glory is ours.

I taste the oranges at half time.  I needed that.

I feel the pain in my leg as I graze it on the hard grass.  It hurt.

At the Airport by Evelyn

I can feel a tear going down my wet cheek.

Watching my nana leaving for Australia.

Licking my icy cold ice cream getting Brain freeze.

I can hear the mighty engine taking off.

I can smell the very berry ice cream.

Thursday Lunch Treats

We would love to hear from a parent or parents who could lend a hand with lunches on Thursdays for about 40minutes from 12.30p.m.   If you are able to help please contact the school office.
