25 February, 2010.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

It was great to meet so many of you at the Picnic and “Meet the Teachers” on Monday evening.  Thank you for your support for the school and your children.

An Apology

We are really sorry that we missed Whaea Mihi off the staff list when we published it.  Please add Whaea Mihi Williams to the Te Arawaru Team.

Principal – Class Awards

At each assembly I recognise two classes who have been extra special.  Already this year the following classes have received certificates:

            Congratulations to Rooms 1, 4, 6, and 14.

When a certificate is awarded the class gets special games to play with for the week.

Some Reminders

Even though we do not have a school uniform we expect children to come to school suitably dressed!

            Remember:

  • Hair tied back
  • No nail polish
  • Shoes – (so many children suffer from stubbed toes)
  • Clothes named (the amount of lost property left lying around is of concern).  We will endeavour to display the ‘lost property’ each Friday as long as it doesn’t rain.  It will be outside the staffroom.  Do come in regularly and have a look!!

Complaints

If there are any major concerns, a complaints policy sets out the procedure for these to be attended to.  Please feel free to contact the school principal, or the administration office for further details.

Religious Instruction Starting Soon

The start date is yet to be confirmed.  We realise that some families request their children to be excluded from the programme.  Please remind your child’s teacher if this is the case.

Stationery Packs

Reminders will come home next week to those families who have not started to pay off their children’s stationery.  If you are unsure of the amount outstanding please check at the school office

ICAS – International Competitions and Assessments for Schools

In August, there will be an opportunity for children in Years 4 – 6 to take part in the ICAS English and Mathematics exam here at Central Normal School.  This is a chance for your child to sit an exam along with children from around the world, including countries such as India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, USA and New Zealand and provides an opportunity to see how your child achieves in an international external examination.

Every student entering ICAS receives a certificate acknowledging participation and is also eligible for awards including High Distinction, Distinction and Credit Certificates, depending on their level of achievement.  If your child receives a High Distinction or Distinction Certificate it means they are achieving in the top percentile of all participating countries.

The exams are marked by ICAS and each child will receive, along with the appropriate certificate, an individual diagnostic report highlighting strengths and weaknesses.  In order for children to sit the exam/s, parents will need to pay $7.50 per exam, with the closing date for the English exam being Monday 5th July and Mathematics 19th July.

At this stage, if you are interested in your child sitting both or either one of these exams, please let Mrs Jan Thomas (Deputy Principal) know, at jthomas@centralnormal.school.nz or phone on 359 3337 or simply send a note with your child to school.

School Donations:

The school donation for 2010 is $50.00 for one child and $65.00 for families with more than one child.  Receipts can be used to obtain a refund from the IRD.  We will have a lucky draw at the end of term for families who ‘have’ paid their donation.

Change to the School Day

The impact of a longer morning along with ‘brain feeds’ is going well now that everyone has become familiar with the changes.

Yummy Stickers

Remember how much free sports gear we obtained last year?  We would love to get even more this year, so keep collecting the stickers off the yummy fruit.

Flatto Peaches are back in store and if you collect 15 bar codes from the packs you can send them in to get a flatto YoYo.

iMove

We are planning to have iMove during week 7 (March 15th – 19th )  We would love everyone to start thinking about getting your feet walking and your pedals pushing to school.  There will be lots of chances to win prizes once again.
