Newsletter:                                                                             Thursday 4th June.

Welcome to another exciting week at Central Normal School. We hope you were able to have some quality family time over the long weekend… and keep warm!

A special thank you to parents who have replied to our surveys.  We really do value your partnership. Further survey forms are available from the office if you have missed replying to us.

New Assistant Principal We are delighted to let you know we have appointed Mr Trevor Saunders as our new Assistant Principal. In our school we have a Deputy principal, Cath Cameron and two Assistant Principals , Mrs Kerry Howard and now Trevor Saunders. Trevor is a teacher who at present is Advisor and Facilitator of Mathematics at Massey University. Trevor will join us at the beginning of term 3.We know you will help us to welcome him into our school

Swine Flu As you may have heard on the news the Ministry of Education is communicating with schools about their readiness to close our school if we quickly needed to if there is an outbreak of Swine Flu. As a school we have a comprehensive readiness plan in place for such emergencies. This is regularly reviewed by our Health and Safety Committee and our Board of Trustees. Included in this is also a ‘shut down’ plan in case we have to keep children safe from an emergency ( eg like the recent one in Napier) while they are here with us. In case of the power going out on us, teachers’ have contact numbers and cellphones to be able to contact you. This does however highlight the absolute need for you to keep us up to date with any changes to your contact details. We have currently undertaken a big update of these details and have found many were out of date.

Remember if your child is unwell please keep him/her home in consideration of spreading flu to other children and staff.

National Standards The Ministry of Education has now delivered to schools the draft National Standards documents in Literacy and Maths. We only have the rest of this term to get our heads around them and respond to the Ministry. We will be attending meetings and holding discussions around them. If as parents you would like to chat to us about them please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kids for Kids…many of our children are busy practising for the Suzanne Prentice concert to be held in The Regent on June 11. We know they will enjoy this special event.

Garden Helpers  we would love to hear from you or a family member who has some spare time and would be interested in helping with jobs in our school garden or cooking some of the produce from our garden with a small group of children.  Please get in touch with the school office with names and phone numbers if you are able to lend a hand.

We would love your ideas: We are busy gathering ideas on all parts of our school from our finances to our learning and from our special programmes to our property. We are asking for your ideas too as you are the other half of our important partnership. One way we could gather your ideas is by holding some informal sessions between 2.00 and 3.00 in the afternoons.( before you pick up your children) If you would be happy to join us for a cup of coffee on a couple of occasions could you please fill in the slip below and send it back to the office.  We could easily have a box of toys available if you are bringing a pre schooler.

I am happy to join a group of parents to share ideas.

The best afternoons for me are ( please circle as many as you can)

Teacher Only Day…reminder that the Friday before Labour Weekend 23rd October will be Teacher Only Day.  Please put this in your diary! The Ministry of Education have granted schools a day to discuss the New Zealand Curriculum.

Vandalism We were visited over the weekend by a group of young people who thought they would tag our school. We welcome your support by letting the police know if you see anything like this happening after hours. We were able to capture their photos on our cameras so have given these to the police.

Head Lice Problems continue to be reported from around the school.

Remember we have available shampoo @ $13.00 a bottle, spray and gel $8 each.  We also have robi combs available from the school office.  A $5 deposit entitles you to the use of a comb for a week.

Remember if your child has long hair it should be tied back to prevent infestations of lice.

Cross Country I have been so delighted with our children and their commitment to Cross Country.  A group went to the Interschool competition and performed very well. Also very well done to the Year 5/6 staff and children who braved the very cold morning last week to participate at Coronation Park.

Congratulations to pupils & ex pupils in the news!

Ryan Room 7 has been  selected to do a ‘voice over’ part in the new Centrepoint Play “Raft”.

Dahnyelle Rogan (now at Monrad Intermediate) won a poster competition about the Anzac Spirit.  Dahnyelle was a pupil in Te Arawaru for several years before going to Monrad.

Aaron Cruden has been selected for the Junior All Blacks and as Captain is presently on tour to Japan.

Isn’t it great to hear what some of our pupils achieve!
