Kia Ora e te whanau,

Another busy week at Central Normal, and it is great that the weather is improving and the children have been able to spend some time outside.

Welcome to our ‘new’ children Krystal, Matrix, Sharna, Cade, Nikita, Paige, Raekwon, Kaine, Annie, Holly, Te Amorangi, & Maraea we know you will enjoy being part of our school family.

Thank you to parents who have kept sick children at home. This is very helpful to stop the spread of flu and colds. We thank you for your ongoing support with this country wide problem.

  Lateness/Absenteeism

We are very concerned about the continual lateness of some children, who regularly arrive into school after the 8.55a.m. bell each morning.  We have children arriving consistently at 9.15 daily.  This means that over the period of one week the child has missed over an hour and a half of schooling. This is disruptive to the classroom as well as affecting the learning of the child who misses an important part of the school day.

We remind families to make sure they phone the school if a child is to be absent.  It is possible to phone after 7.30a.m. each morning.  A text can be sent to 0273578156.  For your child’s safety we need to know where your child is and the reason for an absence.

Parent Conferences

It was wonderful to see so many parents along with their children for the interviews yesterday.

We still have a few spaces available in some classrooms for evening conferences next Thursday 20th August if you have not yet had a conference for your child.

Spare Clothing

Frequently we have muddy or wet children who may require a change of clothing.  If you are sorting through children’s clothing and have track pants/shorts undies, or girls panties that no longer fit your child we would be most grateful to receive them.  Also if we have sent your child home recently in ‘school clothing’ PLEASE wash it and return it to the school office.  Thank you.

Headlice

Please continue to be vigilant about this problem and treat your child/ren as necessary.  Remember we have shampoo, gel and spray available at the office at a competitive price. Also we loan electronic nit combs - $5 deposit and you can use the comb for a week.

School Donation

Very soon we will be sending out reminders about the school donation ($50 for one child or $65.00 for families with more than one child at Central Normal). The Board of Trustees is always grateful for payment of this donation which is used to off set the cost of visiting artists and extra programmes.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

For the last three weeks of this term, the Middle and Junior teams will be teaching the Health unit ‘Knowing What to Do,’ and the Senior team will be teaching  ‘Getting Help’ which are part of the personal safety programme ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe.’

‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ has been designed to provide children with skills to cope in situations that might involve abuse.

It has three aims:

·         To develop and strengthen skills children need to keep themselves safe:

·         To support and encourage abused children to get help from caring adults;

·         To make parents and teachers more aware of the need to keep children from being abused by adults or older children.

‘Knowing What to Do’ and ‘Getting Help’ have been developed by the New Zealand Police and the Ministry of Education. They will be taught by your child’s teacher with support from the Police Education Officers.

To be successful, these programmes need your help and support.  Some Home activities will come home for you to work on with your child.

It is important that you participate as much as possible, so that you can reinforce the messages children are getting and help your child use his or her new skills with confidence.

A 1 hour parents’ meeting will be run by our Police Education Officer in the school staffroom, to inform you about these programmes on:

Tuesday 1 September at 2pm and then repeated at 7pm.
