Newsletter 18 June, 2009
Brrr…. Welcome to a week of winter. At least we have not had to close our school like several others for Flu or snow.
Young Leaders On Monday a group of senior children attended the Young
Leaders’ Conference in The Regent Theatre. It was a stunning day for them and
we were very proud of the way these young people represented our school so
well.
Kids For Kids
After weeks of learning the
words of a large number of songs our children had their big night with Suzanne
Prentice at the Regent last Thursday.
Well done to all the children in the choir who sang so well.
Great Work If you are passing do come and see our foyer. We have a wonderful
display around our major term topic “Bugs and Small Creatures”.
Cross Country despite the weather we have been able to hold our cross
country events. Well done to all of our children who participated. We are proud
of you. Thank you also to all of the parents and friends who supported these
events.
It was great to see the Juniors running fast and negotiating hay bales etc yesterday
afternoon and best of all having fun!
Staff Sickness
Like children our staff are also
getting sick. We really appreciate your support to us when we need to have
different teachers in your child’s class. Relief teachers are very scarce. We
do our very best to find teachers for each class. Our very last resort is to
spread the class around other classes. We do not do this very often
General Sickness:
If your child is unwell please keep them at home.
There is a variety of types of sickness around at the moment including chicken
pox, flu and tummy bugs. It would be good to have a week of sunshine to make us
all feel better!!
Swine Flu We are including some information about The Swine Flu that is being talked about across the country so much. We know that at some time this may impact on some of us. Medical authorities are anticipating up to 30% of NZ population may catch this.
With term holidays approaching
and a number of families planning to travel, both overseas and around NZ,
we are aware of the threat posed by the swine flu epidemic, particularly the
risk posed by travellers returning as potential carriers. At this stage, the
Ministry of Health’s advice is that if staff and students are well and symptom
free after returning from an affected area overseas they can return to school
and do not need to remain at home for any period after arriving back in the
country, or back to the home town/city. However, this may change in the coming
weeks and families need to plan for this possibility. The risk is that if
an infected student returns to school and is in contact with other students and
staff for even a day, the whole school could be closed for a week.
The school board asks you to carefully monitor your family’s health
closely as you return from overseas, or your trip within New Zealand, and
if there are even the slightest flu symptoms, do
not send your son or daughter back to school until you have first telephoned to
check with your doctor, or alternatively check through the
MOH Healthline 0800 611 116. Their advice changes often and we
will try hard to keep you updated.
