23 July, 2009.

Welcome to term 3. We hope children had a chance to get rid of colds and have some time with families over the break. A special welcome to Renee, Tipene, Kate and Ben, our newest pupils. We hope you enjoy being part of our school.

A special welcome to Trevor Saunders. Trevor is one of our two Assistant Principals. He has been a maths advisor at Massey University . Trevor has also been a teacher in schools and a parent of our school. We know you will welcome Trevor into our school

Swine Flu. We are doing what we can to ensure this has as little impact on us as possible. We have hand sanitizers, and continue to urge children to thoroughly wash their hands and use care if coughing or sneezing while at school. Please help us by keeping children at home if they are unwell.

Congratulations to the group of children who prepared a display for the City Library. This was on display over the holidays and it is now in our foyer. The display was part of a Historic Places exhibition.. Our work was around the history of some of the buildings over the road from us in Featherston Street. We are very proud of the group who worked so hard on this.

Parent Conferences   We are holding these again on Wednesday 12 August(afternoon) and Thursday 20 August (evening). We really encourage you to make a time to meet with your child’s teacher. We value this partnership with you. This is a very important term for your child and their learning. Please note all children will go home at 12.30p.m. on Wednesday 12 August.

Later in the term we will be teaching the Keeping Ourselves Safe unit. This is in partnership with the Police. We will be sending information home about this before we teach it and will be holding a parents’ meeting if you want to hear more about it.

Book Weeks Over the next few weeks we are engrossing ourselves in books. We are holding our book weeks. You will hear a lot more about this in newsletters from your child’s team. Each day, the children will have another teacher from the school read to them, and may even have a visitor from outside the school read a favourite book to them.  We would love to have parents, other family members and suitable role models to read to us during this time as well – please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a suitable time.

Gymnastics Our major PE teaching over the next few weeks is gymnastics. Please ensure your child has suitable clothing to wear for this programme, ie shorts/track pants.

Student Teachers We will have a number of student teachers working in classrooms for the next few weeks.

Celebrating Education Week – Inside NZ Schools – Our School Family – Central Normal School was the winner of this competition run in conjunction with the NZ Principals Conference which was held recently.  We await our prize of a framed copy of the winning photo and also rewards from Scholastic NZ.
