News letter No 3     27th March 2008

Kia ora and warm greetings.  Last month I commented on the great weather and it is still with us!  It is great, but some good night time rain would also be most welcome.

The term seems to be  rapidly coming to a close.  There have been changes this year with Easter falling very early, and in term time.  The children do however get their full entitlement of school days through the year.  There is a feeling of excitement in the senior school as children prepare for their camps.  Camp 1 Rooms 2, 10 and 13 at Camp David April 1st – 4th  and Camp 2 Rooms 1, 12, 11, 14  March  8 – 11th .  They will have a great time.  Thank you teachers and parents in anticipation.

FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE, INFORMATION AND SOME REMINDERS

Has your child paid the $2 for the show Toku Tu Moana? If not, please send it to school tomorrow.

School sports teams:

Winter sports for children are not far away.  Basket ball continues, and we organise teams in hockey (boys and girls) and netball (for girls).  We are looking for parents able and willing to coach or manage a team.  If you are interested please contact Pa Ronald Rm 14 or leave name and telephone number at the office.  Further information shortly.

PTA  The parents and teachers association;

Have you thought about coming along?  This is a relaxed, informal and fun group of parents and staff who meet once a month to talk, share and support the school.  It would be great to have your support.

AGM – tonight 7.00 p.m. School staffroom.  (don’t feel that you will get lumbered with a job, unless you want one!) You will be home by 8.30 p.m. at the latest!

The Raffle

Thank you all families who supported the raffle.  Congratulations to:

1st prize to        James;  A new bike and hamper

2nd prize to       Jodie; A hamper

3rd prize to       Sean;        A hamper

A special thanks to Pedal Pushers for the donation of the bike.  Proceeds from the raffle will be shared equally amongst the four school teams.

The Virtues Project at our school:

The virtue of Responsibility will be our focus for the next few weeks.  A key focus is to be responsible at home, in the community and at school.

Signs of success:

You make agreements and take them seriously

You willingly do your part

You admit mistakes without making excuses

You are willing to make things better

You give your best at what ever you do

Health Problems to be aware of

Scabies, school sores, headlice, chicken pox and tummy bugs are all around at the moment.  Please be vigilant and have your child/ren checked and treated if you suspect any of the above.  Tummy upsets require a child to stay home for at least 24 hours after vomiting has ceased to stop the spread to other people.

Education Review Office,  (ERO) Triennial review

We are pleased to have the review over for the next three years.  It is good to have the school, its programmes and practices closely scrutinized, but such events can bring with them some anxiousness.  The oral feedback to the Board of Trustees and Senior staff was very positive and we now wait for the written review.

HPP – an oral language development programme

We are still looking for some parents, grandparents, friends or neighbours who have some time available and would like to come to school 1- 1 ˝ hours, three days a week and share books with some children, one to one.  The purpose is to share with the children the stories, and in conversation help them build up their vocabulary and as well their enjoyment of books and reading.  If you are interested please contact the school office.

Some Children’s Writing

Stockcars by Matthew Room 19

year 2

On Saturday night I went to the stockcars.  There was a huge crash.  Two cars crashed into each other. I saw a car that pushed a car, then it flipped over and it went into the wall. It was yellow and orange.  It was my mum’s friend’s car.

Fishing by Joshua Room 7 year 2

Arrrrrgggh!  Suddenly the wheel blew when we were going over the bridge.  We were going to Blackhead Beach.  Arrgh!  The next day we got struck by two freak waves.  Me and Pop and Dick, and he fell out, over the side of the boat.  The next day we went surfcasting with Uncle Pick and Glenys.  We caught nothing.  On Monday we went surfcasting and we caught a Kawhai and Pop caught three Skip-Jack tuna.

Thought for the month.

A quote from ancient history: If you would cure anger, do not feed it.  Say to yourself ‘I used to get angry every day, - then every other day, - then every 4 or 5 days.’  When you reach 30 days without getting angry have a celebration!
