Teachers Strike 13 November 2018

As you may have read in the notice on Tuesday, the overwhelming majority of teachers and principals have voted to strike again. Since the last strike, the union responsible for primary teachers and principals, NZEI, have been unsuccessful with their negotiations with the Government.

The primary reason for striking is to send a strong message to the government about improving three key aspects:
• a pay jolt to lift the status of the teaching profession and more importantly, to attract and retain teachers in the profession. It is getting harder and harder for schools to attract and find staff as less people enter or stay in the profession. There are now schools in Palmerston North (not just Auckland) trying to find teachers from overseas and recruitment agencies.
• additional resourcing to support those children with learning and/or behavioural needs
• improved workload conditions for teacher and principals.

The strike will take place on Tuesday 13 November and the Board of Trustees have decided to close our school for the day, as there would be inadequate supervision to look after the children. The Board and staff recognise the inconvenience of this, but sincerely hope that you support our cause as we make a stand for better conditions for your children.
