The first syllable ma in this name is shortened version of the word “manga”, meaning stream. In some places in Rangitane and other related communities we find this word shortened ( eg: Makoura = manga koura; maharakeke = manga harakeke ; ) Maharahara is one such name. It refers to the many streams that flow down from this peak. ( Harahara = meaning multitude.)

Hi, I am Joanna Scott. I love teaching at Central Normal – it is an exciting place to be with a fun staff and wonderful children. I currently am Team leader of Maharahara and teach a great class of Year 3 and 4 children. My special interests are in Literacy and Physical Education but I love working with children in all curriculum areas. My family are all interested in the outdoors and we have many family expeditions to ski fields or tramping.

Room 23 - Lesley Blackmore    Classroom Blog

Kia ora, I’m Lesley Blackmore and this is my 4th year at Central Normal School. I teach Year 3 and 4 students in the Maharahara Team. My curriculum loves include all areas of literacy, especially reading and writing. I find it exciting when these are linked to the ICT learning. What a pleasure to teach the students in Room 23, especially as we press on with the Inquiry Teaching model. It is a joy to see them grow in confidence and take control of their own learning and progress. On a personal level, I enjoy breeding and training horses, help folks who are researching their whakapapa/genealogy and design and plant gardens on our small farmlet.
